What is Sogetsu?

"Anytime, anywhere, by anyone, with any kind of material."

In 1927, when everyone believed that practicing ikebana meant following established forms, Sofu Teshigahara recognized ikebana as a creative art and founded the Sogetsu School.

Anyone can enjoy Sogetsu Ikebana anytime, anywhere, using any material. You can place an arrangement at your door, living room, or kitchen table. Sogetsu Ikebana enhances a hotel lobby, a banquet room, shop windows, or even huge public spaces.

Sogetsu Ikebana suits any space and enriches its atmosphere.

Message from the Director

Welcome to our vibrant Sogetsu School of Ikebana community!

Since 1927, when our visionary founder Sofu Teshigahara broke from tradition to establish the Sogetsu School, we have believed that Japanese flower arrangement is not a rigid ritual, but a living art form. Sofu’s revolutionary creed—“Anytime, anywhere, by anyone, and with any materials”—remains the beating heart of everything we do. It reminds us that creativity has no boundaries, and that art can thrive in any corner of the world, using whatever materials inspire you.

Ikebana is a gift meant to be shared. I encourage each of you to bring this beautiful practice into your daily lives, your homes, and your neighborhoods. By sharing your unique arrangements, teaching a friend, or simply displaying your work, you help our community grow and flourish. Together, let us cultivate a more beautiful, expressive world, one arrangement at a time.

Let’s Grow Ikebana!
